Dorothy Annie, or 'Dorry' as she was later known, was born on 9 December 1903 at 35 Albert Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight' to Anne Elizabeth BULL. Her father is unknown but she was raised as the daughter of William James WILLIAMS. She was educated at Ryde Upper Grade School - later to become Ryde Secondary Modern - before being apprenticed to Mrs Springer - who had a workshop at the top of Union Lane where it joins Cross Street - as a dress maker in about 1917. She continued to work for Mrs Springer as a 'court dressmaker' until the birth of her first child in 1942 when she started business in her own right working from home at 7 Milligan Road, Ryde. On 28 March 1931 she married Basil TOMASIN at the Isle of Wight Registry Office. She had two children between 1942 and 1944. In her youth, Dorothy was involved in local amateur dramatics with her husband Basil. She was an active member of Ryde Parish Church, and the Mothers' Union, and a member of Ryde's Central Townswomen's Guild. She suffered with hypertension in later life, and lost an eye to a blood clot. She died of a cerebral haemorrhage on 14 February 1968 after a short stay in St Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight.
